Four Filaments, Beyond Four Colors

Traditional multi-color printing is typically limited to the colors of the loaded spools. The PLA Full Spectrum Filament Bundle is specifically designed for layered color mixing with Snapmaker Orca’s Full Spectrum color mixing feature. As the four filaments alternate along the Z-axis, the colors visually blend as light passes through the thin layers—allowing a single print to go beyond four fixed colors and explore a broader palette.

Colorful 3D printing filaments displayed on spools with layered colors.

How Layered Color Mixing Works

Each blended color shown is created by alternating two colors, with each accounting for 50% of the printed layers.

Adding White layers brightens the original color and reduces its saturation, creating a brighter, softer tone.

Color Mixing on a Printed Model

Broader Palette, Natural Blending

Carefully tuned for color and Transmission Distance (TD), this bundle supports a wider range of blended colors and greater creative flexibility. The balanced TD also promotes more natural color blending and helps reduce visible horizontal stripes that may occur during color mixing, while saving you time on filament selection, matching, and repeated testing.

Recycled Spool & Packaging

Both the spool and packing box are made from recycled materials, reducing the use of virgin materials.

Please Note

1. Full Spectrum color mixing delivers better color results on three-dimensional models and is not recommended for flat models or lithophane models. More specifically, color mixing works best on models with sufficient volume or surface area. The effect may be less visible on small models, while fragmented surfaces or dense details may weaken the color-mixing effect. Such models are therefore not recommended.

2. Full Spectrum is designed to explore richer color variations, not for high-accuracy color reproduction. Color mixing is not precise color matching and cannot reproduce every target color. Final colors vary depending on filament color and transmission distance, model geometry, slicing settings, layer height, toolpaths, and other factors.

3. The software preview is intended only to indicate color trends and help fine-tune settings. The final print may differ from the preview due to filament properties and printing conditions. Before the final print, print a small color swatch with your current settings and fine-tune them based on the result.

4. For better print results, we recommend mixing filaments in two different colors, with each color making up 33%–67% of the mix. Mixing filaments in four different colors may produce darker or grayer tones. Choose based on your desired effect. If you wish to avoid darker or grayer tones, use four-color mixing with caution.

5. Layered color mixing cannot produce pure black. For pure black areas, use a separate black filament.

Printing Tips

Drying & Storage

• Pre-Drying: The filament has low moisture sensitivity and generally does not require drying. However, pre-drying is recommended for optimal print results. The recommended setting is 55°C for 6 hours.
• Storage: When not in use, store the filament in a dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain consistent print quality.

Printing

• Update the Software: Update Snapmaker Orca to V2.4.0 or later, then go to “Filament Management > Filaments” and select the built-in “Snapmaker PLA Full Spectrum” profile to achieve better print results.
• Create Color Mixes: In Snapmaker Orca, click “Color Mixing Match” under “Filament Management” to automatically generate color mixes close to your model’s original colors, or go to “Filament Management > Color Mixing” and click the “+” button on the right to create your own.
• Refer to the Full Spectrum Guide and Color Reference: Refer to Full Spectrum for detailed instructions, or view the Full Spectrum Color Reference for color examples with corresponding filament combinations and mixing ratios.
• Use the Recommended Nozzle and Layer Height: Use hotends of 0.4 mm or smaller with a layer height of 0.1 mm or lower. Larger hotends and higher layer heights may result in visible horizontal stripes. For Snapmaker U1 with 0.4 mm hotends, select “0.10mm Color Mixing @Snapmaker U1 (0.4 nozzle)” under “Process” in Snapmaker Orca. This preset includes official process settings optimized for color mixing to help achieve better print results.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Compability

• Snapmaker U1: Optimized print profiles are built into Snapmaker Orca.
• Other printers: The Full Spectrum color mixing feature may not be supported by all printers and requires compatible printer hardware and slicing software. The filaments themselves are compatible with most FDM 3D printers, though manual parameter tuning is required.

2. What Is the PLA Full Spectrum Filament Bundle (White Edition)?

The PLA Full Spectrum Filament Bundle (White Edition) is a set of our specially formulated filaments designed for Full Spectrum color mixing in Snapmaker Orca.
By combining different filament colors across printed layers, Full Spectrum uses the optical properties of the filaments to create a broader range of perceived colors. The White Edition replaces gray with white to produce brighter, lighter shades and enable pure white areas to be printed using the white filament. Its reformulated cyan, yellow, and magenta filaments also offer enhanced saturation for more vibrant color mixes.

3. What is the difference between the SnapSpeed PLA CMYK Lithophane Filament Bundle and the PLA Full Spectrum Filament Bundle (White Edition)?

The SnapSpeed PLA CMYK Lithophane Filament Bundle is optimized for lithophanes and other flat, layered-color prints. Its Transmission Distance (TD) values are specifically formulated to achieve better color results in light-transmitting models, such as lithophanes.
The PLA Full Spectrum Filament Bundle (White Edition) is designed for Full Spectrum color mixing in Snapmaker Orca. By combining different filament colors across printed layers, it produces a broader range of perceived colors.
The two bundles are formulated for different printing applications because flat, layered-color printing and three-dimensional color mixing require different TD values. Using the Full Spectrum White Edition for flat, layered-color prints, such as lithophanes, may result in visible horizontal banding and suboptimal color results. For the best results, we recommend choosing the bundle designed for your intended application.

4. How does Full Spectrum color mixing work?

Full Spectrum color mixing uses the optical properties of the filaments and layered printing to create blended colors.
For example:
• Cyan + Yellow ≈ Green
• Magenta + Yellow ≈ Orange
• Cyan + Magenta ≈ Purple
• Any Color + White ≈ Brighter, Softer Tone
Each blended color described above is based on two colors, with each color accounting for approximately 50% of the printed layers. Adjusting the layer ratio between the two colors can produce different blended colors and tones.
These blended colors are created by alternating different filament colors across printed layers. The final appearance depends on factors such as filament colors, Transmission Distance (TD), layer height, model geometry, and slicing settings.

5. What colors can I create with Full Spectrum?

The four filaments can be combined in different proportions and layer sequences to create a much broader visual palette than the four loaded colors alone.
However, Full Spectrum cannot reproduce every possible color and is not designed for high-accuracy color reproduction or professional color matching.
Layered color mixing also cannot produce pure black. In general, mixing two filaments produces cleaner and more controllable colors. Mixing four filaments may produce darker or grayer tones and is therefore less suitable when you want bright or highly saturated colors.

6. Can I use Full Spectrum for flat or 2D models?

Full Spectrum color mixing works better on three-dimensional models and is not recommended for flat models or 2D-style artwork.
The layered optical mixing effect is less effective when there is insufficient model thickness or volume. Small, fragmented, or highly detailed models may also produce less noticeable color-mixing effects.

7. Will the final print exactly match the color shown in Snapmaker Orca?

Not necessarily. The software preview is intended to show color trends and help you fine-tune your settings. The final printed color may differ because of filament properties and actual printing conditions.
Factors that can affect the final color include:
• Filament color and Transmission Distance (TD)
• Mixing ratio
• Layer height
• Model geometry
• Toolpaths
• Printing parameters
• Printing conditions
For important prints, we recommend printing a small color swatch with your current settings first to verify that the resulting blended colors meet your expectations before printing the final model.

8. Which version of Snapmaker Orca do I need?

Update Snapmaker Orca to V2.4.0 or later, then go to “Filament Management > Filaments” and select the built-in “Snapmaker PLA Full Spectrum” filament profile to apply optimized print settings.
You can also use the “Color Mixing Match” feature to automatically generate mixing ratios that approximate your model’s original colors.

9. What mixing modes are available in Snapmaker Orca?

Snapmaker Orca provides four Full Spectrum color-mixing modes:
• Color Mixing Match: Start with an existing multicolor model and automatically generate color mixes that approximate its original palette.
• Ratio Mode: Adjust filament proportions to explore different blended colors.
• Cycle Mode: Define the filament sequence for each print layer to create different mixing effects.
• Match Mode: Enter a target color to get a recommended filament combination and mixing ratio.
• Gradient Mode: Create gradual color transitions using selected filament colors.

Choose the mode based on the desired effect:
• Use Color Mixing Match to recreate colors from an existing multicolor model with automatically generated mixing recommendations.
• Use Ratio Mode to fine-tune a blended color.
• Use Cycle Mode to control the filament sequence across layers.
• Use Match Mode to explore a color based on a target color.
- Use Gradient Mode to create smooth color transitions.

10. What print settings are recommended for PLA Full Spectrum?

For optimal printing results and color-mixing effects, we recommend the following settings:
• Nozzle Temperature: 190–230°C
• Bed Temperature: 25–70°C
• Cooling Fan: On
• Print Speed: Up to 250 mm/s
• Pre-Drying: 55°C for 6 hours
• Recommended Nozzle Size: 0.4 mm or smaller
• Recommended Layer Height: 0.1 mm or lower
The recommended settings may need to be adjusted depending on your printer, nozzle diameter, model geometry, and printing conditions.
For Snapmaker U1 with a 0.4 mm hotend, select “0.10mm Color Mixing @Snapmaker U1 (0.4 nozzle)” under “Process” in Snapmaker Orca. This preset includes official process settings optimized for color mixing.
The filament has low moisture sensitivity and generally does not require drying, but pre-drying is recommended for optimal print results. When not in use, store the filament in a dry place away from direct sunlight.

11. Why do I see horizontal stripes or zebra-like patterns in my print?

Horizontal stripes or zebra-like patterns may appear naturally during Full Spectrum color mixing. Their visibility depends on factors such as Transmission Distance (TD), nozzle size, layer height, filament mixing ratios, and model geometry.
To help reduce visible stripes and achieve smoother, more natural-looking color transitions:
• Use a 0.4 mm or smaller nozzle.
• Use a layer height of 0.1 mm or lower.
• Use the built-in “Snapmaker PLA Full Spectrum” filament profile.
• For Snapmaker U1 with a 0.4 mm hotend, use the “0.10mm Color Mixing @Snapmaker U1 (0.4 nozzle)” process preset.
• Fine-tune the mixing settings and test them with a small color swatch before printing the final model.
The White Edition features finely tuned TD values to help colors mix more naturally and reduce the visibility of stripes. However, the final appearance still depends on the selected colors, mixing settings, model geometry, and printing conditions.

12. Do I need any special accessories to use the Full Spectrum Bundle?

No additional accessories are required for the basic Full Spectrum color-mixing workflow on the Snapmaker U1.
For the best results, use Snapmaker Orca V2.4.0 or later, the built-in “Snapmaker PLA Full Spectrum” filament profile, and the recommended printing parameters.

13. Can the four filaments replace buying many individual colors?

The four-filament bundle can reduce the need to purchase many individual colors for creative color-mixing applications.
By combining the four filaments in different proportions and layer sequences, you can explore a broader range of perceived colors with fewer spools. The White Edition also makes it easier to create brighter, softer shades and print pure white areas using white filament.
However, the bundle does not replace every individual filament color, especially when you need pure black or highly accurate color reproduction.

14. How much filament is included in the bundle?

The bundle contains four 1 kg spools of filament. The filament diameter is 1.75 mm, with a diameter tolerance of ±0.03 mm.

15. Important Notes

1. Full Spectrum is designed to explore richer color variations, not for high-accuracy color reproduction. Color mixing cannot reproduce every target color.
2. The software preview indicates color trends and should not be treated as a guarantee of the final printed color.
3. For important prints, print a small color swatch first and fine-tune your settings based on the actual result.
4. Color mixing works best on three-dimensional models with sufficient volume or surface area. It is not recommended for flat models, and small, fragmented, or highly detailed models may produce less noticeable effects.
5. For better results, we recommend mixing two different filaments, with each color accounting for 33%–67% of the mix. Three-color combinations can also be explored, while four-color mixing may produce darker or grayer tones.
6. Layered color mixing cannot produce pure black. Use a separate black filament for pure black areas.
7. The White Edition uses white instead of gray to create brighter, lighter shades and enable pure white areas to be printed using white filament. White layers can also reduce the saturation of the original color.
8. Final colors depend on filament properties, TD values, model geometry, slicing settings, layer height, toolpaths, and printing conditions.
9. RFID recognition is available only on the Snapmaker U1.
